Turing test

For a robot to pass the Turing tests it would need a wide range of skills. Not only would it need to be able to know a language, but it would also need to be able to know the context of the conversation. It would need to be able to problem solve. People may use incorrect grammar, slang, or something else to try and throw off the machine. I dont think its possible to program a machine to face every possible conversation test, it would need the ability to learn things it dose not know. I think a machine that could learn an adapt may have the best chance of being able to pass the Turing test.

E - voting

Electronic voting today seems far from secure. Diebold voting machines keep track of votes on memory cards, which after voting, are taken to a central computer to download the results. The problem with the Diebold machines is that a program could easily be placed on a memory card that would alter the actual vote count with out any traces of tampering. If I were in charge of elections in California, I would recommend that the current Diebold machines should no longer be used. The state should start talking with computer scientists and programmers to help develop a more secure system. The new system should also include some kind of paper trail to verify results and help prevent any tampering. It's clear that there needs to be a change in electronic voting. Diebold's machines are not secure enough to be used in elections. A more secure system needs to be put into place to help make voting easier and safer.

Digital Divide

Today we use computers for everything (work, school, etc.), but many people in the US do not have access to a computer or internet. The gap between those with and without access has the potential to cause problems in many different areas of everyday life. In terms of education, internet and computers have become a very useful and common tool in education. People without access may have a much more difficult time with school since they may not be access the internet or use any other computer programs that become necessities for school. People without access can not use online services provided by the government like paying your taxes online or doing things online for the DMV. People without access may also lose out in terms of health. There is so much information about health on the internet, people who do not have access may not have all the info they need to stay healthy. In terms of entertainment, people without access to computers would be unable watch tv, get music, chat with friends, etc. Computers have also become an essential part to many jobs today. The ability to use word processors , email, and the internet have become fundamental skill in the job market. The gap in technology is something that could effect any part of life. Being able to give people access to computers is something that is becoming more and more important because computers and technology have become such an important part of our country.

Mash-ups

Wikimapia.org

This site is a mash-up of Google Maps and Wikipedia. With this site you can look up the wikipedia information of actual place on google maps. I really like this site because you can find out so much about any area you search. I tryed using it on my home town and found out a bunch of info I never knew about before. I think this site would be really useful for travel too. You would be able to plan out interesting places to visit and know where they all are.

Similarity Web: http://imagine-it.org/amazong/vissimweb.htm

With this website you can search for products that are amazon.com, but shows you similar products. This website is great for looking for new music. I can enter in a band I like and it will show me a bunch of other music I might like.

Mapmyrun.com

This site lets you map out your own runs with google maps. You can see your distance and save different run maps. This site is great, you can plan out and search for new runs, find races/events, and can keep track of your training.

File Sharing

For me, I think it is hard to define a good and bad when it comes to file sharing. I think a good way to separate sharing into good and bad is if your file sharing is stopping you from buying music you would usually buy, then it might be a little ethically questionable. I'll admit sometimes I don't always live up to this rule, but I do agree with those that choose to go around the big record labels for music. Regardless of the right or wrongness of file sharing it seems be something that is here to stay. Instead of trying to end file sharing, major record labels should be finding ways to use file sharing and the internet to help promote their artists.

Analog/Digital

I think the move to digital over analog has been the right choice. The convince digital provides over analog far outweighs any quality lost. Music for example, with my ipod i can carry all of my songs with me instead of worrying about storing a bunch of vinyls. When looking at movies today, digital software has allowed us to make scenes that we couldn't do in the past. While analog may have a little better quality, the digital movement is allowing us to do things we never could with analog.
